IAIMS Progress Report
May 23, 2003

The University of Florida (UF) IAIMS Implementation Grant was submitted June 1, 2001. http://www.health.ufl.edu/iaims/grants/. The initial review of the grant resulted in a Site Visit by a NLM Special Emphasis Panel On January 7, 2002. The outcome included a 172 priority score and a revise and resubmit recommendation. The new NLM IAIMS Funding Program was initiated prior to the resubmission deadline. In addition, the UF Vice President for Health Affairs, the Dean of the College of Medicine, the UF Health Science Center (HSC) CIO, and the Shands HealthCare CIO departed for other positions. UF IAIMS is fortunate to have the support of the new leadership in these positions as we revisit the role and future of IAIMS at the UF Health Science Center. In the interim, our many faculty research and development efforts continue along with the support activities provided by the UF IAIMS processes and structures (some of which have been on hiatus).

UF IAIMS Activities:
The UF IAIMS leadership group has evolved in response to changes in our organization. The current UF IAIMS Executive Committee continues to include leadership from the HSC Library, the HSC and Shands HealthCare Information Technology organizations. Selected Projects

  • Ex Libris Aleph - Library Management System: A new Library Management System (converting from NOTIS) for all State University and Community College libraries is being implemented. http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/lms/
  • CyberCoder for XML: A software engine composed of a set of intelligent routines that will convert actual surgical pathology reports into medical codes and phrases, to be encapsulated as tagged coded data comprising XML documents. Advanced linguistic software is being developed.
  • UF Bioinformatics Initiative: The leadership of the HSC, Colleges of Medicine, Liberal Arts and Agriculture are exploring the development of an interdisciplinary informatics program. http://www.biotech.ufl.edu/BioInformatics/
